En Rhythm: I have to play mellophone next year??!

I just signed up for college marching band and the biggest section is mellophones, with 35 people.

I’m going to suck at it so hard & everyone’s going to laugh at me. Also there’s the part where it’s not even a real instrument, and sort of just a weird…

I’m scared I’m going to sound so bad though, also my high school marching band played these super crappy Bb marching horns & I had to get used to those for the past 4 years and still my tone sucked.

I’m just nervous because it’s going to be an entirely new instrument and what if it messes up my horn embouchure? That would be the worst

the marching horn is an elephant to lug around a field and what actually messes up your embouchure, partially why most modern bands & Drum Corps. no longer march them. playing the 50/50 embouchure will not ruin your horn embouchure as long as you actually learn to separate the two.  There is a learning curve, but when is there not for a doubling musician. It’s college marching band, not orchestra or drum corps, you’re not expected to sound amazing, just energetic, and entertaining.

Blech I don’t wanna

i know your feels. the mello kind of sounds like a duck, and it’s just kind of a cheap imitation of the horn sound.

Played correctly the mellophone is a heroic, soaring, middle voice in the bugle family.  It is not an imitation of the F Horn sound, it is it’s own instrument from a completely different family of designs, in which there is already a dedicated french horn bugle.  Playing the middle horn is what it is, we all have to occasionally double on alto(tenor) horn or Wagner Tuba and marching a mellophone is no different.  You still get counter-melody, rips, suspensions, and 16th note runs on mellophone parts, and that is the highlight of being a mid horn in any capacity.  So everyone needs to stop talking shit on the Mellophone, you sound like a trumpet with a bad ego.

So I’m sitting in this practice room and I swear you not I hear a dying fucking whale.

(It’s actually a French horn playing whole notes)

I think you meant to say that you heard an angelic, elegant swan calling to the heavens.

unless they are doing long tones below bass clef C…

then it’s a whale.

if they made one for double horn we would all no doubt go dizzy folliwing the airpath ball.

Playing all your scales as 3 octaves…

“A Horn Players Brain”

Playing the horn is easy. You just pucker your lips and take a deep breath and put your whole life through the horn.

Lili Agrell

Bach / American Horn Quartet - little fugue in G minor.

amazing showoff of the horns range, and epic 4th horn work.
